Traffic lights are not ornamental features on roads particularly at intersections, but self-operated technological installations that ensure efficient traffic flow and promote safe commute during the day and at night on daily basis.
These devices, which illuminate each of the three coloured-lights - red, amber, and green separately and at regular time intervals, direct movement and compel motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and road users in general to abide by road safety regulations without the presence of a human law enforcement officer.
But what happens if they become dysfunctional and there is no law enforcement officer to direct traffic? Obviously, there will be traffic jam, irresponsible driving leading to motor vehicle collision, knock down of pedestrians and hawkers resulting in possible loss of lives among others.
Unfortunately, this preventable phenomenon has become the trend in recent years. Dysfunctional traffic lights have become a growing concern in Ghana as the situation creates an environment conducive for accidents and crimes on the various road networks in the country.
Achimota Abofu intersection is one location where traffic light malfunction is often experienced. Currently, the traffic lights are dysfunctional and thus, not serving their purpose leading to increased vehicular congestion, collisions (vehicle-to-vehicle/motorcycle or vehicle/motorcycle-to-pedestrian), unregulated vehicular and pedestrian movement, motorist conflict and delayed travel time.
Residents bemoan the dangers associated with the situation and call on appropriate authorities to fix the traffic lights since their absence is a threat to their lives and properties.
“The street hawkers are unable to work here again because of the absence of traffic lights. These lights have been damaged for more than a year. Government officials ply this route and they have seen it, yet nothing is being done here. Numerous accidents and deaths have occurred here because of this. We are not safe here,” a roadside food vendor laments.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for the Okaikoi North Constituency, Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni, in an interview with Pan African News, says she has taken pragmatic steps to ensure that the traffic lights are fixed.
“I have been assured, I have made a move on it. This is not something I can do alone. I have witnessed the cables being changed so it is my prayer that the traffic lights work this week, if it doesn’t I’ll still make a move on it” she stated.
The adequacy of traffic lights on our roads plays a crucial role in ensuring public safety, facilitating efficient traffic flow, and promoting economic development.
However, their functionality superintendents mere adequate existence, and hence, imperative for the government and other stakeholder institutions to prioritise their routine maintenance and fix them when they are faulty.
The importance of these three-light featured devices must not be understated as they contribute significantly in curbing road carnage while reducing national mortality rates.
