NAGRAT opposes ppointment of Director General

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has voiced strong opposition to the appointment of Professor Smile Gavua Dzisi as Deputy Director-General for Management Services at the Ghana Education Service (GES). NAGRAT argues that despite Professor Dzisi's impressive academic credentials, she lacks the necessary professional teaching experience to effectively occupy the position.

NAGRAT's National President, Angel Carbonu, emphasized that the GES is a professional institution within the public service, not an extension of political office. He highlighted that previous occupants of the role were professional teachers who advanced through the ranks, including serving as regional directors before assuming the position of Director of Management Services. Carbonu called on the government to reconsider and withdraw Professor Dzisi's appointment, suggesting that her expertise would be better suited to a university or technical university setting rather than the GES.

This stance mirrors NAGRAT's previous objections to appointments within the GES. In October 2022, the association opposed the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as acting Director-General, citing his lack of teaching credentials and experience. Similarly, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) called for Dr. Nkansah's removal, arguing that the position should be reserved for education professionals.

These developments underscore ongoing debates about the criteria and processes for appointing leadership within Ghana's educational sector, highlighting tensions between political decisions and professional qualifications.
