The Ministry of Health has convened a high-level meeting on Friday, March 29, 2025, to deliberate on critical issues concerning HIV/AIDS in Ghana. The meeting, chaired by the Health Minister, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, brought together key stakeholders, including the Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Prosper Akanbour.
Discussions centered on Ghana’s preparations to host the upcoming International Conference on AIDS, an event expected to attract global health experts, policymakers, and advocates. The conference is anticipated to provide a platform for addressing emerging challenges in HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and funding.
Another major topic was the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in Ghana, with an emphasis on the latest data trends and interventions to curb infections. The sustainability of locally manufactured antiretroviral (ARV) drugs also featured prominently, as stakeholders examined the long-term viability of domestic production and its impact on accessibility for persons living with HIV.
Funding for HIV/AIDS programs in Ghana emerged as a key concern, with discussions highlighting the need for sustainable financial mechanisms to support prevention, treatment, and awareness campaigns. Stakeholders acknowledged the importance of securing both local and international funding sources to ensure continuous support for affected communities.
As part of efforts to enhance the effectiveness of Ghana’s response to HIV/AIDS, the Ghana AIDS Commission sought the support of the Ministry of Health and the Minister in fostering efficiency within the commission. The request emphasized the need for strengthened collaboration, resource allocation, and strategic interventions to improve service delivery and impact.
The meeting concluded with tentative agreements on several of the issues raised, while also underscoring the need for an in-depth review of the operational framework of the Ghana AIDS Commission. Further engagements are expected to refine strategies aimed at enhancing the commission’s efficiency in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
