The National Democratic Congress (NDC) at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, 28th May, l2024, called for the dismissal and prosecution of the Attorney General, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame in relation to the ambulance purchase trial that has been in the news for quite some time now.
The NDC National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia headed the press conference and was the principal spokesperson. Heindicated that the Attorney General interfered with the third accused person, Richard Jakpa in an attempt to assist him incriminate the first accused person, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in the ongoing ambulance purchase trial.
Addressing the press, Mr. Asiedu Nketia played an alleged audio recording of a telephone interaction between the Attorney-General and Richard Jakpa. Snippets of the recorded phone conversation captured the yet-to-be confirmed voice of the Attorney-General, convincing the third accused, Mr. Jakpato falsify a medical excuse to skip court proceedings pending his return to the country.
At the party’s moment of truth series, Mr. Asiedu Nketia also stated that the Attorney-General has brought the enviable office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice into disrepute and public obloquy. He termed the telephone conversation between Godfred Dame and Richard Jakpa as very scandalous hence informing the demand by the NDC for the immediate and unconditional resignation of Godfred Dame for bringing the high office of the Attorney-General to public opprobrium.
In an interview with the Member of Parliament for South Dayi constituency, Mr. Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor on a news platform, he indicated that the NDC should consider seeking for a bipartisan probe into the matter because the AG has misconducted himself in so many ways.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) also held a counter press conference later that day which was headed by the Chairman of Legal and Constitutional Committee of the party, Frank Davies. He said the NDC has consciously decided to peddle lies, falsehoods, misinterpretation and unwarranted claims with the intention of obstructing the course of justice and scandalizing the criminal proceedings in the High Court, to shield the Minority Leader in Parliament and former Deputy Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson and his associates from taking responsibility for authorizing some transactions which resulted in a huge sum of 3.27 Euros being lost by the state.
The NPP spoke highly of the current Attorney-General, Mr. Godfred Yeboah Dame, touting him as one of the most successful AG’s in and out of court.
They affirmed that the Attorney General’s credibility is intact and the NDC’s call for his dismissal is unwarranted.
The party also claimed that the released tape recording involving the Attorney-General, Godfred Dame and the third accused, Richard Jakpa has been doctored hence not a fair representation of what transpired.
