Dr. Leticia Obeng: The first Ghanaian Female Scientists and Sister of Theodosia Okoh
Dr. Leticia Obeng, the first Ghanaian female scientists, held the distinction of being the pioneer Ghanaian woman to attain a Bachelor's degree in science in 1952 and the first to achieve a doctorate in science in 1964.
She is a sister to the late Theodosia Salome Okoh, the brain behind the designing of the Ghana National flag.
She was born on January 10, 1925, in Anum, Eastern Region.Dr. Leticia Obeng started her educational journey in Abetifi, Kwahu, for primary schooling, followed by middle school in Kyebi, and pursuing her secondary education at Achimota School from 1939 to 1946.
She later, studied at the University of Birmingham in England from 1948 to 1952, graduating with distinction in Zoology, as she made history as the first Ghanaian woman to be awarded a Bachelor's degree in science.
Furthermore, she furthered her studies by securing a Master of Science degree in Parasitology in 1962, and a PhD in Tropical Medicine in 1964, both from the University of Birmingham, focusing on the black fly and its relation to river blindness.
Sadly, Dr. Leticia Obeng passed away on March 27, 2023.
