Commemorating The Ghana National Flag Designer, Theodosia Salome Okoh 102 Years On

 

Yesterday (13th June 2024) marked exactly 102 years Madam Theodosia Salome Okoh was born. 

 

Madam Theodosia Salome Okoh, born on June 13, 1922, was a Ghanaian luminary, educator, artist, and the visionary behind the design and creation of the Ghana National Flag in 1957.

 

She played a pivotal role in the advancement of hockey in Ghana, serving as the inaugural female chairperson of the Ghana Hockey Association and subsequently as President of the Ghana Hockey Federation for more than two decades.

 


Madam Theodosia Salome Okoh was born Theodosia Salome Abena Kumea Asihene to Reverend Emmanuel Victor Asihene and Madam Dora Asihene, being the fourth child out of eight.

 

Following Ghana's liberation from British colonial rule, she presented her flag design, which was selected as the official national flag by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on March 6, 1957.

 

Under her guidance, Ghana secured qualification for both the Hockey World Cup and the Olympic Games. Madam Theodosia Salome Okoh passed away on April 19, 2015, at the age of 92.

 

In recognition of her enduring legacy, former President John Dramani Mahama decreed that all flags be flown at half-mast for three days from April 21 to April 23, 2015.

 

In her honour, the National Hockey Stadium has been named after her.
