Kayayei Empowerment Programme: Dr. Bawumia Advises Head Porters (Kayayei) To Participate In Training Programmes

The Vice President and flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has advised head porters who are locally known as “Kayayei” to take advantage of the government’s youth empowerment initiative dubbed “Kayayei Empowerment Programme” to better their livelihoods.

He said despite the skepticism and criticisms about the establishment of the training and hostel facilities under the Kayayei Empowerment Project, he knew it would be possible.

Dr. Bawumia made this assertion during the official launch of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme and the commissioning of the Training Centre at Madina in the Greater Accra Region.

During the official launch of the Kayayei Empowerment Programme and the commissioning of the Training Centre at the Social Welfare premises in Madina, the Vice President said the programme aims to train 5,000 girls between May and November 2024 with 600 Kayayei per cohort each month.

Dr. Bawumia further stated that young girls will be provided with practical skills and knowledge to prepare them for specific trades and occupations at the end of their participation in the training programme.

“In addition to the strides already made, I’m thrilled to announce that discussions are ongoing with Metro Mass and Ayalolo to teach them driving. Furthermore, we are in talks to provide them with Information Communication and Technology (ICT) training”, he stated.

He said government is committed to addressing the issue of marginalized segment of the society.

“This noble endeavour resonates profoundly with the core values of our mission, as it squarely addresses the pressing needs of a marginalized segment of our society that has long been relegated to the shadows of neglect and indifference”, Dr. Bawumia added.

Leader of the beneficiaries, Hajia Zara Abubakari Harun, on behalf of all the head porters, expressed profound excitement and gratitude for the kind gesture and urged all beneficiaries to take full advantage of the opportunity given them.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia later inaugurated the KayayeiEmpowerment Training Centre which is aimed at providing head porters with Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) under the programme.

The Centre features two training rooms, three pantries, a kitchen, a clinic, 15 washrooms, five dormitories, among others.
