 On January 9 2005, Hearts of Oak defeated Asante Kotoko 8-7 on penalties in the CAF Confederation Cup Final.



The continent's club competition which plays second fiddle to the CAF Champions League is an amalgamation of the defunct CAF Cup and CAF Winners' Cup.


Both sides had settled for a hard-fought 2-2 draw on aggregate so penalties were required to determine the winner.


In the ensuing shoot out, Hearts'skipper Lawrence Yaw Amankwah Mireku failed to score from twelve yards but his misery turned into joy after his opposite number Joseph Hendricks had his effort saved following an earlier miss by Edmund Owusu Ansah.


Hearts who were chasing their second continental crown lifted the coveted title after Michael Nana Kwakye Donkor drilled home the decisive kick to silence the vociferous crowd at Kumasi's Baba Yara Stadium.


Sannie Mohammed, Daniel Quaye Ziem, Clement Acquah Harrison, Lawrence Yaw Amankwah Mireku, Michael Nana Kwakye Donkor, Daniel Oppong, Kwame Antwi, Lawrence Adjah Tetteh, Lawrence Adjei Okyere, Emmanuel Osei Kuffuor, Joseph Ansah, James Boateng, Francis Bossman, Bernard Dong Bortey, Frederick Ablade Morgan, Prince Tagoe and Louis Agyemang played a pivotal role as the Phobians romped to a historic and well-deserved win.


Sir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio of blessed memory masterminded the triumph having steered them to victory in the CAF Champions League on December 17, 2000.


The game was graced by the then Veep Alhaji Aliu Mahama of blessed memory, Vice President of the Confederation of African Football General Seyi Memene retired also deceased and President of the Ghana Football Association Captain Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe retired.


Other dignitaries in attendance were the then Youth and Sports Minister Kwadwo Baah Wiredu of blessed memory, Dr. Anthony Akoto Osei, Sampson Kwaku Boafo and Samuel Yaw Osafo Maafo.


Ato Ahwoi who chaired Hearts' Board of Directors, Thomas Okine, Dr. Ransford Anetey Abbey, Alhaji Sulemana Braimah alias Alhaji Hearts of blessed memory, Stephen Akwetey and Neil Yao Armstrong-Mortagbe all played an integral role in the giant-killing feat for the 2000 CAF Champions League winners.
